Academy Heads to Youth Championships in Auckland

Saturday, February 1, 2020

The Academy will be competing in the prestigious U17 Youth Tournament in Auckland in March 2020.  The Youth Tournament this year is for players born in 2003 or after and will be held at Western Springs FC, Seddon Fields, Auckland between 20-22 March.

Teams from the Academy have been attending the tournament for the previous two years including 1st Team player Sam Sutton who played in the 2018 edition.  Last years edition saw 12 of the squad go on to play at the FIFA U17 World Cup later in the year with 10 representing New Zealand and 2 the Solomon Islands.

Academy Director Paul Temple believes its an important event in the Academy calendar. "This tournament is heavily Auckland focused, there are thousands of people each day watching so its the perfect opportunity for us to showcase the Academy to a section of the football public who don't see what we do, how we do things or even who we are.  Its also a really great chance for our boys to play against different teams from around the country, deal with the demands of tournament football and how important the squad is, recovery protocols and all the little 1%s that make a difference to their ability to perform."

The Academy will be playing as Lower Hutt City AFC (our official partner club) and will announce the squad in the coming days.
