How It Works

THE PLAYERS

We have players from Wellington, all around New Zealand, Australia and further abroad.  If you're good enough you can be selected for the Academy but preference is given to New Zealand citizens.

Wellington based players live at home, school at their local school and travel into trainings each day.  Players from outside of Wellington relocate to Wellington by either staying at boarding school or home staying with a local family.  If players live with a homestay family they attend the high school in zone for the location they live in.

We start our full time programme at 14 years old and have 40+ players. There is a programme for younger players but this is Wellington based and part time.  These are U14 players who still play and train for their local junior club in Wellington.

SCHOOLS

We don't have any preference on the school that our players attend.  We have players who attend Scots College, St Pats Town, St Pats Silverstream, Rongatai College, Wellington College, Hutt International Boys, Onslow College, Otaki College & Kapiti College.  Scots College and St Pats Silverstream are the only schools in the region that offer boarding house accomodation so the majority of our out of town players attend these schools for that reason.

The players in the full time programme don't play regular school football for their school 1st XI.

COMPETITIONS

In New Zealand there is a winter and summer football season.  Summer season is only for the elite players and consists of the older age brackets.

The Wellington Phoenix Academy has three groups, U20s, U17s and U15s in the full time programme.  In the summer our U20s play as Wellington Phoenix U20s in the Stirling Sports Premiership (National League), our U17s play as Wellington Phoenix U17s in the National Youth League while our U15s play a variety of pick up games against local clubs and Academies.

In the winter we have a partnership with Wellington United FC which sees our U20s play as Wellington United 1st Team in the Men's Central League (MCL), our U17s doesn't play in a competition but has weekly pick up games midweek against Capital Premier/Youth teams.  This acts as a reserves to our MCL team.  Then our U15s play as Wellington United in the Capital 17th Grade A Competition.

FACILITIES

The Academy trains at Martin Luckie Park, Newtown Park and Boyd Wilson Field (Victoria University).  During the winter Wellington United MCL Team play their home games at Newtown Park.  The Academy head office is based at Martin Luckie Park in Berhampore.
